The Importance of Taking Naps
How long should you be napping?
- Napping for 20 minutes keeps you in the lighter stages of sleep so you are less likely to feel groggy upon waking.
- Napping for 90 minutes allows you to complete a full sleep cycle that goes through all the stages of sleep.
- Tip: Set a timer for 30 minutes (10 minutes to fall asleep and 20 minutes for your nap).
- Researchers recommend napping before 2 p.m. so your nap has less impact on nighttime sleep.
Benefits of napping
- Napping is restorative and reduces fatigue during the day.
- Counteracts daytime drowsiness from insufficient sleep the night before.
