Program Purpose

Texas State University’s Student Health Center is launching the MedCats volunteer program. Student participants will have the opportunity to gain valuable learning experience in a medical facility while assisting the clinical team with assessment, evaluation, and management of patients who present for healthcare.

Role Description

The MedCats Volunteer Program is a year-long volunteer opportunity for Texas State students. Clinic Student Volunteers will perform the following primary functions:

  • Assist healthcare providers and nursing staff with patient care
  • Measure vital signs
  • Stock and clean exam rooms
  • Guide patients through the clinic
  • Collect and protect patient information
  • Transport lab specimens

Requirements to Participate

In order to work at the Student Health Center as a volunteer, students must have completed tuberculosis testing and immunizations as required for all healthcare workers. All volunteers will complete safety and confidentiality training prior to working in the clinic.

Student volunteers will be expected to commit to working in the clinic for a 4 hour time period once per week at the same time each week for the semester.

Application

Interested students can apply for the volunteer program from April 1, 2025 until April 8, 2025. Applicants selected for interviews will need to be available for a brief virtual interview on April 24 or April 25, 2025. Required orientation sessions August 21-22.

As part of the application process, students will be asked some short answer questions. Please prepare your responses before launching the application to ensure you can complete your submission in one sitting. The questions you will need to answer are listed below:

  • (1,000 character limit) Please briefly describe what you hope to gain from the experience of volunteering with MedCats.
  • (1,500 character limit) What qualities and/or experiences do you possess that make you a competitive applicant for the volunteer program?

Applicants should obtain their immunization records and CPR/BLS cards so that they are ready to submit this information when requested.
